MULHERIN NEW YORK  is pleased to present Pregnant Pause, a solo exhibition of paintings by Matt Kleberg. This will be the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.

"In these recent paintings, invented architectural facades provide stages for potential inhabitants. The compositions of the paintings often mimic the immediate environment in Brooklyn: mundane architecture along the daily walk from apartment to studio, punctuated by quirky embellishments- the Ark of Salvation church with the giant blue door, Navy Yard buildings with obsessively bricked archways, mechanic shops on Waverly that look like castles.

The various iterations reestablish this space, drawing from architectural embellishments, as well as textiles, Byzantine iconography, and modernist painting. The flattened and irrational spaces echo the strangeness and mystery of icons, while wonky lines expose a flimsiness and uncertainty in the structure. Over the past year, the anticipatory space of the paintings was paralleled by the expectation of a new baby." - Matt Kleberg, 2017
